Middelvlei is situated in Devon Valley, Stellenbosch. It has been owned by the same family (the Mombergs) since 1919, when the first grapes were pressed. In the 1960s Stiljan Momberg set about establishing Middelvlei as one of the model farms in the district. He gradually upgraded the vineyards and by 1992 had replanted the entire 130 hectares under vine. Today the farm is managed by his two sons, Tinnie (winemaker) and Ben (vineyard manager). Ben's wife Jeanneret manages the business. The farm specializes in quality red wines, namely Pinotage Merlot Blend, Pinotage, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon as well as white wine Chardonnay (unwooded). The top of the range is the super premium Momberg, a blend of Pinotage, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, all matured in new French barrique. As the predominant soil types Hutton and Clovelly are naturally moisture retentive, there is little need for irrigation. Limited yields enhance fruit richness and intensity.
