The Moschioni family have been cultivating grapes in the heart of Colli Orientali Del Friuli (Eastern Hills) for more than a century. They originally produced equal quantities of whites and reds. When Michele Moschioni entered the company in 1987, he started on the difficult yet rewarding path of concentrating soley on the production of red wines. With enthusiasm, determination and belief in the potential of their vineyards, more importance was given to the red grapes: Refosco, Schioppettino, Tazzelenghe and especially Pignolo, which had been grown by the family since the mid 1950s. Subsequently, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon completed the range. Only one kind of white grape, Picolit, was preserved. No pesticides and insecticides are used in the vineyards along with non-chemical fertilisers. Yields are strictly controlled and typically only 3 tonnes of grapes per hectare are produced, resulting in only 40,000 bottles total annual production. The winery has, over recent years, received much international acclaim, most notably from Robert Parker and has, as a result, become synonymous with the production of great quality red wines.
